Listening tests show that signals rich in (uncontrolled) harmonics created by distortion sounds annoying, so I don't personally think they do any good to us. As said before, short bursts of distortion on some instruments are acceptable and many times intentional - think about drums, guitar FX. But this happens in the stage of recording or mixing.</description>
